COLUMBIA SPORTSWEAR COMPANY® COMPLETES EMAIL MARKETING DEAL WITH ONMERCIAL.COM
Oregon-based OnMercial.com's MercialXpress technology to power Columbia's email marketing and document distribution.
July 31, 2001 (Beaverton, OR) Columbia Sportswear Company® (Nasdaq: COLM), one of the largest designers, manufacturers, marketers and distributors of active outdoor apparel in the U.S., has signed an agreement to use OnMercial's MercialXpress(tm) email marketing technology. This is a significant milestone for Beaverton-based OnMercial as it marks the firm's entry into the rapidly expanding and highly competitive apparel marketplace.
The MercialXpress technology allows marketers to create highly compressed rich media and document files that require no reader software by the recipient. This means that email recipients of a MercialXpress file simply send an e-mail and the technology does the rest. The files are streamed into a small 8-kilobyte HTML email that operates regardless of the end user's bandwidth, computer knowledge or operating system. The current MercialXpress release includes animation enhancements, improved design capabilities and a new printer driver.
Columbia's Internet manager, Randy Cole, chose the MercialXpress after extensive research of the OnMercial file and streaming delivery technology and competing technologies. "We needed the system we chose to do three very specific things: “the email file needed to be small and allow a rich media delivery; the system needed to be easy to use for the recipient; and we needed sophisticated tracking statistics. We also appreciate the fact that the recipient does not have to download any helper or reader software to see the content being sent them. All of our requirements were met by the MercialXpress product, and we gained dozens of other features that added to the power and simplicity of their product."
Columbia will use MercialXpress to Web enable existing documents and files using OnMercial's printer driver conversion tool. The company expects to implement campaigns for announcements, electronic brochures and catalogs with the suite of design tools and delivery system capabilities.

By Anonymous Research and Markets have announced the addition of the "Sports Clothing & Footwear Market Report 2003" report to their offering.
In 2002, UK consumers spent £4.05bn on sportswear — £2.9bn on clothing and £1.15bn on footwear — which represented 10.3% of the total clothing and footwear market. Sports shoes have a 25% share of the total market in footwear compared to sports clothing, which represents 8.3% of total clothing. While the trainer has become the classic leisure shoe for most age groups, clothing is more susceptible to the vagaries of fashion.
Since the 1980s, it has been almost impossible to separate purchases that are for active sports participation from items that are purely for fashionwear. We estimate that only 20% of sportswear bought in the UK is for actual sport or exercise. However, fashions in participation and spectator sports do have an influence on demand, giving rises to successive fashion waves of sportswear designed for running, football, outdoor pursuits or board sports.
Nike, adidas and Reebok are the world's `big three' sportwear companies, with the top positions in the US and in the UK market. Generally, sportswear is a globalised industry, with production centred in the Far East, even for the lesser brands. Leading sport-specialised brands in the UK include Speedo (swimwear), Umbro (football) and Asics (running). Some brands occupy a dual position in sport and in fashionable casuals, particularly Italian brands such as Ellesse and Fila.
Sportswear benefits from the substantial retailing sector that developed in the 1990s, now consolidated into several major multiple operators: JJB Sports, Blacks Leisure and JD Sports are the largest. In 2002, a fast-growing discount retailer, Sports Soccer Ltd, bought the most famous British sports retailer, Lillywhites.
The early 2000s have generally been a period of consolidation for the sportswear industry. Renewed rapid growth seems unlikely to occur, while young people prefer `tribal' styles — hippy, boardwear, denim or leather, etc. — and reject the sporting look because their parents wear it. Specialist manufacturers are also suffering because of the move from competitive sports, to exercising in the gym or jogging, which require less dedicated clothing.
Assuming that low inflation continues, we forecast that consumer spending on sportswear will grow by a modest 17.6% over the next 5 years, reaching £5bn by 2007.

Spokane, WA May 19, 2003 – Vyper Sportswear has announced that the company is now carrying a line of color-changing inks, and will introduce garments with the technology in conjunction with Hoopfest, the world’s largest outdoor 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
Dubbed “Chameleon Wear”, the garments printed with the inks have already garnered rave reviews in test marketing in Pullman and Spokane Washington. The concept is popular to young and old alike, and offers unique marketing and sales possibilities to schools, corporations, clubs and organizations, as well as many others.
Vyper will offer teams who are purchasing their Hoopfest uniforms the opportunity to use the inks in the creation of their designs. The inks are “magical” in that colors appear outdoors and then disappear indoors. Some colors change from one color to another. They are a light sensitive color-change colorant which changes color through exposure to sunlight or UV light.
As part of the promotion, Vyper Sportswear will be conducting a drawing for $250 cash at 5:00 P.M. on June 27th. There will be no purchase necessary to enter the drawing; people will merely request a bid on their uniforms for Hoopfest. In addition, Vyper will be providing a bonus of a custom embroidered sports bag valued at $50 to each member of any team who wins their bracket who purchased their uniforms from Vyper Sportswear.
Besides the introduction of the color-changing garments via the uniforms, Vyper Sportswear will be selling a special line of T-Shirts and Sweatshirts featuring the color changing technology and some of the hottest basketball inspirational sayings out there. These “theme shirts” are expected to be available all throughout the downtown area during the event.
Vyper Sportswear is a full service screen-printer and embroidery shop that specializes in the creation of custom imprinted clothing. The company is among the area leaders in supplying these garments to the corporate, educational, and athletic community.
